Maybe the difference between North and South America's production is related to the difference in soil. We have deep, rich glacier-produced prarie soil (which we are wasting at an alarming rate). They have the thin, nutrient-poor soil of the humid tropics, which when cleared, can't grow much for long. Pressure for cash crops and beef has replaced the forest-grown crops with monoculture or clearing.
